Inline code verification and OCR comparison Project type: Automotive Date 2019 At a turbocharger manufacturer, various parts are marked with data matrix codes in order to track the production process. These markings take place partly on labels, partly by means of laser as direct marking. So far, a handheld scanner has been used to verify the extent to which the code is readable or not. In the past, however, it has happened more often that the codes were readable by the customer in the factory with the internally used hand scanners, but no longer with the hand-held scanners in the processing plant. In this project, a code quality check according to the standard ISO 29158 (AIM/DPM) is now to be implemented, which takes place directly after the marking process. After the marking in the customer PC-based automation system, the code quality should be stored in the data set of the product. Standard 29158 sets out all quality criteria for directly marked data matrix codes. The various lighting options (according to ISO 29158) • Diffuse “Offaxis” = Dome • 30° = Low Angle are controlled directly by the camera. The optics are fixedly set to the respective working distance from the code. The camera / image acquisition is triggered directly by the PC system. The results are further processed directly in the PC system. In the image field there are two data matrix codes and one area clearwriting. Both data matrix codes are to be evaluated in quality (grading). A standard-compliant verification would be possible with the CRETEC VeriTube Inline. In addition, the clear text should be read.
